New Entries/Amendments for 2009-02-27

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

CommentWhen I see comments like "something does not warrant a separate entry because it is basic stuff" in some submissions by some of your regular contributors, I almost hesitate to submit the above.

As for me, scratching around in and about the elementary tools of Japanese, a dictionary or reference source, has limited value unless it includes a comprehensive range of the basic stuff of the language.

The above submission is already included in two separate entries, but when - as a beginner - one is wondering whether "字" is being used as a suffix of the first two or the beginning of the last kanji, it would really help to have the whole combination; which combination appears abundantly as a complete string on Google and elsewhere. Of course, as always, once one knows, it is simple; however, when one is struggling to find out the meaning in the first place, a data base like yours can often be the only tool which provides the answer.

P.S.
With reference to your comment(20/02/09) on "そうなんですか", namely: "That's because you put in cross-references when you proposed the そうなんですか entry, but didn't put in the entries for the targets."

I am sorry about that. I did not realize that the links did not work on the "Work in progress file". And, at the time, I was not thinking much about the mechanics of linking, but in any event I could not find a good reference to promote the linked items out of the "Work in progress file". That was why I made my own submission to be included in the "Work in progress file".

Anyway, the end result, as modified by yourself, is helpful for the novice and I am obliged for that; and I'm sorry to have added to your workload.

Editorial Comment 英語字幕 is pretty obvious, but worth keeping as it's very common (I'm more relaxed of late about these "multiword expressions.")
Links only apply within EDICT itself. The WIP file is just that - it or its entries could be removed without notice. If you see something in that you think is useful, please convert it to a "proper" entry.

CommentThis one could use some sense splitting. How does this look? The English meanings seemed to be ordered by sense already. I'm not sure about "time" though, would that be a musical term alongside pitch and rhythm?

I'm unsure of "strain" and "trend" as well.

I could not find this kanji in any of the dictionnaries of the website, but Rikai-chan, which supposedly uses JDIC dictionnaries, mentionned it (with no meaning, just the なぎ reading).

Editorial Comment Don't know what Rikai-chan was doing. くさなぎ means grass-mowing, but I don't think it's used outside the context of the sword name.
