Current Entry飲まない [のまない] /keep away/WI1/
Headword 1飲まない
Reading 1のまない
Part-of-speechv5ru, adj-i
English 1keep away
English 2to not drink
ReferenceSee below.
CommentComing across this entry, I began to wonder about the 'obvious' combinations and word forms; and the general reluctance to include the obvious in the data on this site. This headword get over 2m hits on Google. If one then looks at the various dictionary examples of usage [there is no headword that I can see], which range from 'keep away' to simply '(someone) will not drink (something)', I am wondering whether this entry should be beefed up in terms of the description of its meaning as opposed to simply being classified as 'work in progress'; and potentially on the verge of deletion.

Further, how should it be classified in POS. Does it have a verb tag, an adjective tag, etc.?

Moreover, should there be sample sentences included to cover the scope of meaning? Presumably the entry would have to be upgraded for that.

Further, when I come across this expression in text as simply 'のまない', I wonder whether the novice should conclude that 'のまない' may be entirely different from '飲まない'. 'Perhaps the 'の' could be simply a particle,' the novice may think. Perhaps 'まない' is the expression which should be looked for in the dictionary. Perhaps there is a 'まう' which can become 'まない'. No, that would become 'まわない'.

Whereas, if the entry were upgraded, the novice who searched your site would have no doubt as to meaning of such an apparently simple expression which crops up often.

Editorial Comment Well, (a) I have deleted it from the WI file. It's simply an inflection of 飲む, and nothing special. The "keep away" was a truncation of Eijiro's "飲まない〔酒・たばこを〕 : keep away"; (b) I can't do much at the dictionary level to stop novices from over-analyzing things like のまない; (c) if 飲まない were staying, I'd use a catch-all PoS like "exp".

Commentcould be combined with 螺旋[らせん], but all dics keep it apart, probably because its usage seems limited to the strict mathematical senses of the word. (wikipedia combines, though)

the two senses could be combined, but since this is a 'math' entry, and a helix and a spiral aren't really the same thing to geometry nerds, they might be better off apart
