Headword 1 | 消費主義 |
Reading 1 | しょうひしゅぎ |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | consumerism |
Reference | I just made that term up while writing an essay and then checked the dictionaries, without result. Google, however, has 40,000 hits for the term (among which http://www.cm.hit-u.ac.jp/kyouiku/mcm/thesis/matsui1.html seems sufficient to back me up) and 440 hits for 消費主義者. (Google has also some 4000 hits for the term 消費者主義, which i find illogical, and subsequently 5 for 消費者主義者, but maybe this shows that this term is still in its genesis period). EIJIRO has one single bit of supporting evidence in the form of 反消費主義 (anticonsumerism). |

Comment | Just found that term in WWWJDIC and think it should be cross-referenced to the just submitted 消費主義. :-)
BTW, http://www.exbuzzwords.com/static/keyword_3378.html most peculiarly confuses "consumers' rights" with "consumerism", so i will do a bit more research, using the translators' mailing lists. |

Comment | I had second thoughts about that term after sending my submission, so i checked, and - lo and behold - another "false friend" was exposed. ;-)
(The previously suggested /requested cross-reference to 消費主義 is, of course, no longer advisable.) ;-) |

Not totally false in that "consumerism" in English has several
senses. See http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/consumerism
I have also added an entry for 消費者主権 and xreffed to it. |
