Current Entry菖蒲 [しょうぶ;あやめ] /(n) (1) iris (flower)/(n) (2) (あやめ only) Siberian iris (Iris sanguinea)/(n) (3) (しょうぶ only) sweet flag (Acorus calamus)/ (1351480)

English 1(1) iris (flower)
English 2(n) (2) (あやめ only) Siberian iris (Iris sanguinea)
English 3(n) (3) (しょうぶ only) sweet flag (Acorus calamus)
CommentI think this should be split. They don't refer to irises in general as suggested now, or even to the same kind of iris in particular. The only thing that might hold them together is a sense that should be marked as archaic.

Editorial Comment I don't think centre/center is a good translation of 本部. I have added "head office" and "main office". BTW, I don't attempt to label English spelling variants by country, for a number of reasons.

Interesting. None of my refs have that sense, but Googling I find it in use.

Current Entry選任 [せんにん] /(n,vs) election/(P)/ (1392370)
Headword 1選任
Reading 1せんにん
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1selection for a position (and its responsibilities)
Reference小学館 (c) 1994 - ISBN 4-09-505521-9
Comment"Election" sounds like 選挙 to me. 選任 refers, as I understand it, to selecting someone to take a position and its responsibilities (hence the use of 任). I note that my 類語例解辞典 (小学館 (c) 1994 - ISBN 4-09-505521-9) does not list 選任 with 選ぶ or even, for that matter, list it anywhere under the general title of 選定. The entries under 選定 number 20 or more in this dictionary, so I would expect coverage. As explained to me by various natives, 選任 does not refer to the method of selection (it could include election by voting, etc.), but simply means selection of a person for a position.
