Commentoops. that's not what i wanted. i misread the headword as モナハン.

モナガン is of course only Monaghan, but モナハン can be both.

Editorial Comment Yes, Monaghan can be pronounced both ways. I wonder how Duhig gets katakanaized.

Current Entry厄払い [やくはらい;やくばらい] /(n,vs) exorcism/good riddance/ (1537930)
Headword 1厄払い
Reading 1やくはらい
Reading 2やくばらい
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1exorcism
English 2ceremonial cleansing from evil influence
CommentThe phrase "good riddance" was given for this word, but that is more likely a translation of 厄介払い, a more informal term. I think 厄払い is limited to the technical sense given here.

Current Entry山の手 [やまのて] /(n) hilly (residential) section of a city/uptown/ (1755120)
Headword 1山の手
Reading 1やまのて
Part-of-speechn
English 1hilly (residential) section of a city
English 2Low City
ReferenceKojien and Daijisen
CommentThe term Yamanote refers to a physically high area of a town, while the "uptown" has no such connotation. The uptown section of an city in the US, where the term is used, can be anywhere. The use of "uptown" and "downtown" for Yamanote and Shitamachi is misleading and should, in my opinion, be avoided. Japanologist Edward Seidensticker, who studied the subject, used High City and Low City.

Editorial Comment I'll drop the "uptown", although Japanese JEs such as GG5 use it. "Low City" is a mistake, I think.

Editorial Comment Adding やぐら to the *kanji* part of the entry just makes a mess. AFAICT 櫓/やぐら never means "tomb". I think you actually mean the 窟/やぐら entry. I'm happy to tag that as "uk" (usually kana).
