Current Entry事自体 [ことじたい] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1事自体
Reading 1ことじたい
Part-of-speechn
English 1itself
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThis submission is unlike my previous submission [冒讀] where the meaning is included in the dictionaries, but seems to be failing to come up in great numbers on the Google search. This above headword [事自体] shows up over 600K on Google, but appears nowhere in my reference books. However it does show up in your RH; and that is one positive step for the searcher.

I am, therefore, coming without the support of references. However, I come with logic. This must be a very common term.

My original objective was to confirm the meaning of this statement: "事自体冒讀である。"

In my understanding of the text, it reads, "It is blasphemy itself". That fits with the context of the paragraph which I was reading. Further, when I see it on Google, that meaning of this submission also seems to fit quite well.

Unless I am wrong [and I am more than happy to discover that], this is another case where the meaning is so obvious to those who know, that it is not even worth an entry in the standard dictionaries in my possession.

However, I am hoping that you will be able to include this submission [with a correct meaning, if I am wrong] so that I can make another little step in the process of understanding this language and also in understanding the logic of what needs to be explained to the novice. It is strange that the novice is forever confounded by the obvious, but can discover specialist terminology in most dictionaries. A bit like life in general, I suppose; like trying to define bullying in schools, the workplace, etc., namely: the experts cannot fully define it in any meaningful way so the experts cannot find a defined formula which will resolve the whole problem once and for all. Ah! Well ...

Editorial Comment More commonly "こと自体", and often seen preceded by a verb, e.g. the example in GG5: そもそもそんな提案をしたこと自体が間違いだ. The proposal itself was a mistake.
A very common phrase is "そのこと自体は", i.e "as such, ..." as a sentence starter. Yes, well worth an entry.

Headword 1聖書学
Reading 1せいしょがく

CommentWith over 28K Google hits, I wonder if this can be promoted. The reading is correct and the meaning is clear, but the headword, with the suffix "学" does not appear in any of my reference books. However, other usage makes it clear enough.

Headword 1釈義学
Reading 1しゃくぎがく
Part-of-speechn
English 1exegesis
English 2study of biblical interpretation
ReferenceSee below.
CommentYou have the entry: 釈義 【しゃくぎ】 (n) exegesis.
You also have the entry: 釈義学者 【しゃくぎがくしゃ】 exegete.
I wonder if you would include the interim step, as per this submission, so that the entry deals with the main stages; as indeed your other similar entries do.

This submission gets only just over 120 Google hits. The principal entry gets 28K and the "exegete" gets just over the 100. If there is some doubt about this submission being included, the inclusion should rank higher in importance that the "exegete" because putting the suffix of "者" is somewhat less important for the novice's understanding than including the suffix of "学". However, all would be good.

and it can probably be deleted

涜 is itaiji for 瀆 not 讀, although it wouldn't suprise me if people were using 讀 as a jis-friendly alternative

Editorial Comment Actually 冒讀 is not in Nelson; Nelson has 冒瀆. Even so, it's probably prudent to keep 冒讀 with a "iK" tag.

Referencefor example:
http://www.churashima.net/shima/ishigaki/4hounensai/index.html
CommentThe festival is standard (tradition) in Okinawa, and the reading of the kanji throughout Okinawa is "ほうねんさい", but it is quite conceivable that in some areas of Japan people might call this "ほうねんまつり" - i hope someone else who lives there has further information...

(PS: some appear to translate this as "thanksgiving festival", which is denotionally bnot incorrect, since both thanking for food received and requesting sustenance for the future are part of this festival - but the word "thanksgiving" has specific connotations in English, that i think it is more misleading than it is useful - i still have to laugh when i think about that visitor from the US a few years ago who was shocked red about the raunchiness of our festival, because he had come here with some misconception induced by the expression "thanksgiving festival" in his guidebook) ;-)
