New Entries/Amendments for 2009-08-17

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

CommentI have not tried to incorporate any amendments in the above because that may result in your feeling a need to delete the amendment; if, indeed, the existing entry is as you intend it to be. However, following the observation, "Actually, I didn't even know what ichidan verbs were. Somehow the POS thing makes more sense now. " by Scott [14th Aug 2009], I wondered if you could see any merit in going a step further in the above entry and saying what an "一段動詞" really is by defining the type of verbs in English; or even by just giving Japanese examples. I appreciate that one can see from your existing entry that "一段動詞" is a "type II verb" and that one can turn away from your site to another source in order to look-up what "一段動詞" and "type II verb" means in practice, but why should I not be able to find that information from your site? Maybe, if I searched harder, I could. Maybe I missed it.

I hope that is not the case so, at this moment, I think, in the same way that Scott seems to imply, there is a presumption that the searcher should know these things, whereas many including Scott, and especially - the novices, - do [or did, as the case may be] not know.

"五段動詞" gives rise to the same observation.

Your list of codes helps, but inevitably the list is designed for a different purpose than the entries defining the meanings of the headword entries.

Editorial Comment Fair comment. I have modofied the entries to read:
一段動詞 【いちだんどうし】 (n) (See 五段動詞, 食べる) ichidan verb (one of the two main conjugation classes of verbs in modern Japanese, usually ending in -eru or -iru); type II verb
五段動詞 【ごだんどうし】 (n) (See 一段動詞, 話す) godan verb (one of the two main conjugation classes of verbs in modern Japanese, usually ending in -u, -ku, -su, -tsu, -gu, -bu, -mu, etc.); type I verb
Suggestions for improvements welcome.

Headword 1桜貝

CommentMy strong guess is 'no'.

A "Carpenter's tellin" is a particular species named after some guy called "Carpenter" ('Tellina carpenteri' - http://www.eol.org/pages/450912). Any shell of genus 'Tellina' or family 'Tellinidae' is a "tellin" (see the OED), but not a "Carpenter's tellin". In order for サクラガイ to count as a "kind of Carpenter's tellin" it would have to be a subspecies of 'Tellina carpenteri'. But サクラガイ is 'Nitidotellina nitidula', which is in a completely different genus, at least in all the classifications the Japanese appear to be using.

Besides, they don't even really look alike.
Carpenter tellin:

サクラガイ:
http://www.aquarium.co.jp/shell/gallery/sakuragai.jpg

ニッコウガイ (日光貝) seems to be a 'virgate tellin (Tellina virgata)' (http://bigai.world.coocan.jp/pic_book/family/6390.html), which is obscure in English. It gets 400 real hits in Japanese, but most of those are false positives for ニッコウガイ科 (Tellinidae).
