New Entries/Amendments for 2009-08-21

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 21 Aug.

Headword 1工所
Reading 1こうじょ
Part-of-speechn-suf
English 1shop
English 2factory
English 3mill
English 4works (as in ironworks)
English 5plant (as in manufacturing plant)
CommentThe meaning of this suffix usually does not appear when one uses the "translate words" function, since the EDICT database only carries two compounds (of a huge number of possibilities) that contain it (EIJIRO also shows only 4 distinct compounds) - rather than trying to cover all bases by adding tons of additional compounds to the database, just adding the suffix would alleviate this shortage.

Current Entry公舎 [こうしゃ] /(n) official residence/(P)/ (1631170)
Headword 1公舎
Headword 1公舍
Reading 1こうしゃ
Part-of-speechn-suf
English 1official residence
Reference公舍 seems to be a (quite rare, possibly Chinese) variant of 公舎 - but it
appears in enough contexts of various kind to warrant its inclusion:
A) It appears in both the J-J and J-E dictionaries at http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/ .
B) It also appears on a few websites related to general topics like "living",
"homes", and the like, as well as in some historical contexts - examples here:
1) The Japanese Wikipedia entry on computer scientist Donald Shell contains
地元の学校長公舍 (since links containing Japanese characters don't seem to be
transmittable without mojibake, i'll give you an alternate route: go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Shell and select the 日本語 link at the
left side of the page)
2) The expression 和洋折衷の住宅「旧市長公舍」appears on the page at
http://machi-isan.sakura.ne.jp/kaihou/kaihou11.html
3) Under the picture of the "blond" cat on the page at http://coum.shiga-
saku.net/d2009-07-12.html there is text containing the phrase 知事公舍(府
公舍)の辺に住んでる茶色の若いネコ
C) Google has little evidence: 府公舍 gets 4 entries, 市公舍 gets 3, 県公舍 just
1, and 国公舍 gets 12 (all Chinese).
CommentYou had zapped various incomplete entries about 公舍 the other day - so i
took pity with the person who tried to enter this item but didn't know how to
do it right. :-)

Headword 1探し出す
Reading 1さがしだす
Part-of-speechvt
English 1to find out
CommentI wonder if this ought to be clarified to distinguish it from the standard sense of "to find out" (to learn), by adding something like "to ferret out", "to smoke out" etc. Eijiro lists "to chase up", "to run down", "to rout out" for 探し出す

Current Entry官舎 [かんしゃ] /(n) official residence/ (1211700)
Headword 1官舎
Headword 1官舍
Reading 1かんしゃ
Part-of-speechn-suf
English 1official residence
Reference1) There are several pages making reference to 札幌爾志通西洋邸(白官舍)
2) On the page at http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?
t=687230&page=13, part of a large photo documentary called (in slightly
mangled English) "Historical Japanese Architectures in Korean&Taiwan", there
is an entry for "PingTung .Taiwan" that reads as follow: "1938年 - 屏東県屏東
市 旧日本軍飛行第八聯隊官舍" - the photos say it all (of course, kanji on the
photos are written from right to left)
CommentSimilar to my previous entry, here is the same minor kanji variant (even more
minor this time) - this variant is perhaps obsolete in contemporary Japanese,
since all usage samples i have found relate to history (perhaps what is now a
minor variant was at one time the main headword?) . In any case, since some
people might use JEDIC to decipher historical texts (yours truly is a prime
representative of this crowd), adding the variant would seem warranted. :-)

Editorial Comment 舍 is a recognized 異体字 of 舎. I'll flag it as "oK".
