English 4(n) (2) (燭 only) (unit, obs.) equiv. to candela
Referencekoj, daijr, daijs, meikyo
Commententries for 灯 may need a bit of a cleanup. for example, "燭 only" in this entry is wrong. it should be "しょく only" since ともしび is an invalid reading for the unit.

this might be a good way to go about it. or not:

明かり,明り,灯,灯り,灯火 [あかり]
(1) (明かり,明り only) light/illumination/glow/gleam
(2) light/lamp

灯,灯火,燭 [ひ(灯),とうか(灯火),ともしび]
light/lamp

燭 [しょく]
(1) light/lamp
(n,n-suf) (2) obsolete unit of luminous intensity (approx. 1.0067 candela)

灯,灯し,明かし [あかし]
(See 御明かし) light (esp. as a religious offering)/lamp

灯,燈(oK) [とう]
(1) light/lamp
(suf, ctr) (2) counter for electric lights

灯,照射 [ともし]
(1) (灯 only) light/lamp
(2) (esp. 照射) baiting deer with a lighted torch

点火,灯 [とぼし]

Editorial Comment It's a problem having 灯 in every entry which includes "light" in the gloss. But yes, more of a split is OK. What about 灯し火, which misses out in your recommendation? 灯かり has been dropped too.

CommentSince there is no provision to suggest an amendment to an entry in the
"special text-glossing" database, i am using (hijacking) this form instead.

Problem: when using "special text-glossing", one gets the following:
寸胴に 【ずんどうに】 (adj-na,n,adj-no) cylindrical container (pot, vase, etc.);
being stumpy; having no waist; sleeveless; ED
However, there should be no に there...

I just tried it with the passage "寸胴とは、焼物を形成する

Headword 1胸像
Reading 1きょうぞう
Part-of-speechn
English 1bust (statue)
CommentThe links work fine for me in Safari, but if I use Firefox, they goes to 胸 for me too, on both Google and Google Images (which is okay with me, given this particular set of Google Image results). These are the URLs I get:
[G]: http://www.google.com/search?q= 胸 &hl=en&lr=lang_ja&ie=euc-jp#18723719206980682291
[GI]: http://images.google.com/images?q= 胸 &hl=en&ie=euc-jp#9620423950367644196

I think the problem might be the fact that I use NoScript. NoScript says that it has "filtered a potential cross-site scripting (XSS) attempt from [http://www.csse.monash.edu.au]". As a result, it has "sanitized" the URLs. The before and after are in the console messages below:

[NoScript XSS] Sanitized suspicious request. Original URL [http://www.google.com/search?q="胸像"&hl=en&lr=lang_ja&ie=euc-jp] requested from [http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1E]. Sanitized URL: [http://www.google.com/search?q= 胸 &hl=en&lr=lang_ja&ie=euc-jp#18723719206980682291].

[NoScript XSS] Sanitized suspicious request. Original URL [http://images.google.com/images?q="胸像"&hl=en&ie=euc-jp] requested from [http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1E]. Sanitized URL: [http://images.google.com/images?q= 胸 &hl=en&ie=euc-jp#9620423950367644196].

Probably worth making a bug report to the NoScript people. I don't use the [G] and [GI] links enough to know if this is a new problem or something that's just cropped up.

Editorial Comment Interesting analysis. Does seem to be a bug in NoScript.

CommentTurning off the XSS protection feature in NoScript fixes the problem, so that's definitely where the bug is.

English 4sleeveless
Commenti don't know if i really understand the problem, but i think this special text-glossing entry might be the culprit, since it's lacking the more common reading (ずんどう)

寸胴 【ずんど】 (adj-na,n,adj-no) cylindrical container (pot, vase, etc.); being stumpy; having no waist; sleeveless; ED [G][GI][S][A][W] [JW]

Editorial Comment The text-glossing function doesn't look at the readings, so that won't be the reason. (I have forced a "寸胴 [ずんどう;ずんど] ..." version in now.)
