CommentNow, I am wondering, this headword cannot be uncommon in Japan. Every Japanese person would know how to read it and say it, but where would the non-Japanese beginner find out whether it is "こ" or "しょう"? I cannot find it in any of my references, save that the alternatives are given as a prefix. The argument runs like this, if all the words, where the prefix could be used were listed, then virtually every noun would be listed against such a prefix. That much I understand, but ...

In the following two RH entries, we have the same problem.
大新聞 【おおしんぶん】 (?) ???; RH
大新聞 【だいしんぶん】 (?) ???; RH

Perhaps in Japan, one can say what one likes and so it does not matter in the least. Perhaps not, but if the beginner can only discover by asking a Japanese person what is best, then the answer depends upon the person asked; in short - unlike with your site - there is no peer review and no feeling of certainty.

I accept that I can travel through teaching manuals [not always consistent]. I accept that I may have missed one of the clues to this on your site, but if I have not missed something, then the beginner stumbles again on a point of trivia.

What a treat it would be if your request for volunteers came about and we had the readings under all the sample sentences, but - following the exchanges on that - I can understand some of the problems. And, of course, there is no merit in simply having the computer generated readings with a warning that they may not be correct; unless, of course, there was the facility for progressively making the corrections over time [and, as was said, with colour coding to identify approved reading].

Nonplussed, as ever!!
