CommentI am sorry to come back on this one, but I wish to comment again in the context of the following text:-

...巫女の口を借りたる死霊の物語...

I can jump from Japanese to English, in the context of meaning, without difficulty. I can analyse all the parts of the text, save "たる" without any difficulty. Now, if I say, we are referring to "the story of a deadman's spirit who has borrowed the mouth of a shrine maiden (in order to tell his story)", then it can be said that the "たる" is equivalent to (the spirit) "exists" (borrowing the mouth of a shrine maiden). The written description of the entry indicates that "たる" is simply acting like the copula uniting subject and predicate. That also fits with the entry for "たり(P)", where it gives the note "(See たる (arch) (after a noun) to be)"
Now, I wonder about the Part of Speech which is shown as "aux-v". If "たる" acts as an "aux-v", then I wonder if some examples may be included which demonstrate that. The novice comes wondering about these things. Perhaps, I could make some changes to the above, but I do not wish to add to your workload by your having to delete what I have done in order to put in something better. Also, last time I raised this point, Rene very helpfully gave an analyse of the use, but the entry is still less than comprehensive for this word which crops up often in older text and modern text which quotes from older text.

Editorial Comment I hesitate to get involved. たる is complicated and obscure. Makino & Tsutsui ignore it. GG5 only gives a few examples. Short of delving into Martin, I think I'll just duck. There is a limit to how far a dictionary can go.
