New Entries/Amendments for 2009-10-10

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 10 Oct.

English 1AAA
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI have made this submission in this mode because I am wondering if there is an error in your cross-referencing. [I cannot make the submission in the original location.]

When I searched for "もがな" as part of "いわずもがな", which means something like "better left unsaid", the following came up:-

"もがない" with a cross-reference to "椀ぐ". So as a matter of interest, I clicked on the cross-reference to see what would come up. Nothing came up.

In a way, that did not surprise me because "椀" is a bowl and not a verb form. However, I may have misread something; if so, my apologies.

Editorial Comment Thanks for noticing that. The verb もぐ used to be in the dictionary as 椀ぐ, which is the wrong kanji. The xref tables were generated from that. I have removed it now. BTW, in WWWJDIC you can't search for a kana string in the middle of a reading.

捥ぐ vs. 椀ぐ

ReferenceEDICT entries for いだくand なつく
Comment1)
Currently, when a text containing the expression 懐かしい is checked for kanji
meanings with the help of "Translate Words", we get the following result:

懐かしい。
Possible inflected verb or adjective: (negative base)
懐く 【いだく】 (v5k,vt) (1) to embrace; to hold in the arms (e.g. a baby); to
hug; (v5k,vt) (2) to harbour (e.g. grudge) (harbor); to bear (e.g. a grudge); to
entertain (e.g. suspicion); ED

I am afraid いだかしい is not the right answer. ;-) The amendment will allow
the reader to derive なつかしい from the entry...

An xref to 懐かしい would be helpful...! m(_ _)m

Editorial Comment The two 懐く verbs are split because they are quite different in reading and meaning. I have added a composite version to the special file used by the "Translate Words" to help in this case: 懐く [なつく;いだく;だく] /(v5k,vt) (なつく) to become emotionally attached/ (いだく,だく) (1) to embrace/to hold in the arms (e.g. a baby)/to hug/(v5k,vt) (2) to harbour (e.g. grudge) (harbor)/to bear (e.g. a grudge)/to entertain (e.g. suspicion)/
I have also added the xrefs you suggest.

English 1pseudo-explanation
English 2rationalization
English 3justification
English 4pretext

ReferenceMy understanding comes from a discussion with a nurse about palliative care -
弁解 is not really an explanation in the sense of 説明 but something that,
although it may satisfy someone's need to get an explanation, is something that
would not stand up to a test.

Editorial Comment I don't like "pseudo-explanation" much, so I'll just drop explanation down the list to make "justification" and "rationalization" more prominent.
