New Entries/Amendments for 2009-10-17

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 17 Oct.

Headword 1
Reading 1かん
Part-of-speechn,suf
English 1publishing
English 2edition
English 3carving
English 4engraving
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThe novice comes scratching his head and wondering why this kanji, which he sees everywhere [well almost], does not seem to be covered properly by way of a meaning. Yet the meaning and reading are clear enough.

Perhaps, this kanji could be promoted and, perhaps, then the 100s of hits on your site, where it is used as a suffix, will be more clear to the beginner.

In addition to the fully completed combinations where this kanji forms a suffix, there are many RH entries [e.g., see below] which are useful and would be more easily understood if one could find the meaning of "刊" on your site.

処女作の発刊 【?】 appearance of one's first book; WI4
半週刊 【?】 appearing twice weekly; semi-weekly; WI2
五年刊 【?】 fiveyearly; quinquennial; WI2
半年刊 【?】 half-yearly; WI2
朝日新聞朝刊 【あさひしんぶんちょうかん】 (?) ???; RH
朝日新聞夕刊 【あさひしんぶんゆうかん】 (?) ???; RH
朝日朝刊 【あさひちょうかん】 (?) ???; RH
朝日夕刊 【あさひゆうかん】 (?) ???; RH

The reading and meaning of many of the preceding kanji [preceding the suffix] in these RHs can be helpfully found as combinations elsewhere on your site [unfortunately, a two-step process pending, of course, the gradual proper completion of the RH entries].

As I finish this submission, I am still wondering if I have missed something and that somewhere on the site "刊" is adequately explained. If so, my apologies.

Editorial Comment Single-kanji entries can be a problem to sort out from kanwa data. In this case GG5 and Kojien have it. I've cut it back to: 刊 [かん] /(suf) publication/edition/

Current Entryウンベルト・エーコ /(n) Umberto Eco/WI1/
Headword 1ウンベルト・エーコ
Part-of-speechn
English 1Umberto Eco
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI wonder if this could be promoted.

Umberto Eco [1932年1月5日]. [Wiki notes] he published 『薔薇の名前』in 1980.

I was drawn to your site to search for the reading of the name, which name I saw attached to a footnote reference. At least, your site was the first step to finding the answer. If you promote the headword with the added information, then, for the next novice, it will be both the first and last step of understanding the reading.

Current Entry間にあう [まにあう] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1間にあう
Reading 1まにあう
Part-of-speech?
English 1???
English 2RH
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI wonder if the above should be deleted. See main entry:-

間に合う 【まにあう】 (v5u) (1) to be in time for; (2) to serve (suit, meet) the purpose; to be good enough; to be enough; (P)

If the reading of "間にあう" is valid, then perhaps it can be included in the main entry. If the RH entry has a completely different meaning, then perhaps it can be completed, but I have not found any support for that.

Editorial Comment Added 間にあうto the 間に合う entry. Cleaned up the RH a bit too.

second English sense found in EIJIRO
Comment1) I suspect that additional acceptable English renderings could exist in countries i haven't lived in in yet (Australia, NZ, RSA, etc.)
2) Methinks this is an entry that should ideally be in both EDICT and ENAMDICT, since it is a regular part of a name but not a name in itself
