| Comment | It would be helpful for the novice if this were promoted. The meaning can usually be guessed at when the main headword is discovered and when the meaning of "法" is attached. However, the reading is the important thing. If this headword were promoted, then it would come up in a natural place on the main search following the main headword; and the novice would be satisfied. When this headword is only discovered as an RH entry, the novice is still left to wonder; and that wondering may also extend to the meaning. The novice soon discovers, in learning Japanese, that kanji combinations do not always have a simple meaning which is based solely on logic. Your site removes many of these doubts for the novice; and promoting the above headword would remove yet another.
I do understand that, if one extended the above reasoning, one could add "法" to so many entries. However, if "法" is added to those headwords where it most often occurs, then this would satisfy the needs of the novice. Then, once the novice has got the idea of usage for all the day to day words, then, it becomes easy to apply it to the less used words. In short, the novice gradually becomes a more competent student who starts to play with [perhaps I should say, 'use with confidence'] the language; as opposed to the early stages of simply trying to grasp the basics. I may add that many of my dictionaries show the complete combination for this headword, but they only show the reading for "学習", thus, leaving the user to discover, in some other location, the compete reading. No wonder the novice has a problem. The English learner of Japanese is accustomed to going from "text" to "dictionary" [alphabetically speaking] in order to find the word required. Accordingly, there is a real problem to go from "text" to "dictionary" in Japanese and discover the "text" and "the meaning", but no complete reading. It is the possibility for such completeness that makes your site so interesting. It is this possibility that makes your site the first port of call for many novices who search for understanding. It is, indeed, an onerous duty which you have undertaken in the task of satisfying the needs of such demanding expectations. |
