New Entries/Amendments for 2009-12-06

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Current Entry掃除 [そうじ] /(n,vs) cleaning/sweeping/(P)/ (1399790)
Headword 1掃除
Reading 1そうじ
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1cleaning
English 2sweeping
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI have no problem with the above.

I am however wondering about this: If the novice searches for "掃除する", the headword, above, does not seem to come up. I had understood that starting from the beginning of the "search text", the search would find the nearest match. Therefore, I thought that searching for "掃除する" would get me to the above headword, but it did not. The Part-of-speech, tells me that the entry is "vs", but that is after I have found the headword.

The following entries do give a partial answer as part of a wider text entry:-

掃除すること 【そうじすること】 cleanout; WI1
掃除するのが大変だ 【そうじするのがたいへんだ】 be hard to keep clean; WI3

However, that is not quite the same as a pure search result.

Also the main search did reveal many combination where "掃除" forms a part; and that is very useful, but ....

The point is that the novice may consider that "掃除する" is the logical thing to search for on your site and it seems to me that "掃除" (vs) should come up directly from that search.

I hope that this comment is helpful.

Editorial Comment If you search for 掃除する, the 掃除 entry comes up but it is down the list somewhat. Selecting the "Limit matching to the start of words (kanji keys only)" option makes the 掃除 come first. This is where you need to be a bit canny with the interface. WWWJDIC tries to make exact matches come up first, but if you ask for "掃除する" (which is not there) it defaults to all entries in which the longest match can be made (i.e. 掃除), in a not-very-useful order.

Headword 1いく日か
Reading 1いくにちか
Part-of-speechexp
English 1some days
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThe site includes the following:-

幾日も 【いくにちも】 (n) (See 何日も, 幾 .いく) for many days; for some days
幾日も幾日も; いく日もいく日も 【いくにちもいくにちも】 (adv) (See 幾日も) day after day; for many days

The above submission appears in text [including children's stories, in the context of say "after some days had passed by"] so it seems a useful addition to the site.
