| Comment | Shogakukan gives also "to carry". This meaning fits in with text which I have read.
The entry quotes, "手にバケツをぶら下げていた [she was carrying a bucket]" I have not found a kanji for "ぶら". Moreover, I cannot work out how the Japanese text tells us that it is a woman who is carrying the bucket. The carrying of buckets may be exclusive to women in Japan, but I doubt it. This is yet another area where textbooks and dictionaries often cause confusion to an English reader. Why the compilers cannot say "someone was carrying the bucket" or, perhaps, change the Japanese text to mean "a woman", if that is what is intended. |
