New Entries/Amendments for 2010-01-20

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Commentなんぞ gets over 4m Google hits, whereas 何ぞ gets about half a million. I am wondering if the order of the entry should be reversed. The addition of "奚" represents a kanji which equals the headword.

I was searching for "なんぞ" as a dictionary entry, but I could not find it; nor could I find "何ぞ". However, in Nelson I found "奚" and the reading "なんぞ". And, of course, I found the above entry on your site.

My apologies if this is of no help on such a common word, but things fall better into place for the novice when the priorities of reading help to explain better the obscurities in kanji readings.

I hope that it does not matter that the headword is repeated in one of the readings, but I was not sure about the effect of deleting the prime reading; even though it was simply a repeat.

Editorial Comment If the kana form is more common, it is indicated by a "uk"; not by putting the reading in with th ekanji versions.

CommentI have declined from making an amendment because I may be on the wrong tack.

I was searching for "落っこって" [which I take to be derived from "落っこる"]. It gets over 200k Google hits, but I cannot find it in my own reference books. However, as indicated above, I was inclined to the view that the second part was based upon "凝る" with a meaning like "giving up enthusiasm". Although that has some support from the text which I was reading and also other searches, I am not convinced.

In searching, I came across the above entry. Although that did not match, the sentence below had a highlighted word which did match [in the past tense]. However, that match did not seem to be derived, as the past tense, from the main entry above. The sentence was as follows:-

ハンプダンプティは塀の上;ハンプダンプティは落っこった;王様の馬と王様の家来を連れてくる;ハンプダンプティを元通りにできなかった。 Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; All the King's horses and all the King's men; Couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again.

I have submitted this entry because it may be the case that the sentence does not match the headword or, maybe, there is a wrong link.

A new headword for my original search would be useful and maybe one of your experts can submit an entry which allows me to search and find "落っこって" or "落っこる" or whatever it is derived from, together with the meaning.

Editorial Comment I am sure Paul Blay had a good reason for aligning 落っこちる and 落っこった. I suspect the latter is a colloquial or emphatic version of 落っこちた. I don't know what I can do about it as an entry.

Editorial Comment It gets ZERO Google hits! Did you transcribe it correctly? I searched for Chaetodo frembii and got plenty of "アオタテジマチョウチョウウオ", so I made it that.
