CommentTentatively, I am proposing a promotion with the object that under the spotlight of your experts, an improved translation may arise. This picks up the odd 23k Google hits. It appears in Roy Miller's Reader, but he does not [at least, I cannot find] assist with a meaning. See 43, p. 200, col. 32.

The relevant text is this: ".... 地震によって堂舎十数棟倒壊の厄にあった。"

Based upon my understanding [following some research], I take this to mean something like this: "... it was a calamity that tenfold numbers of big and small houses [dwellings] were destroyed as a result of the earthquake"

I hope that gives sufficient reason for you to promote this RH.
