New Entries/Amendments for 2010-03-13

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Current Entry名宝 [めいほう] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1名宝
Reading 1めいほう
Part-of-speechn
English 1rare treasure
English 2noted treasure
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI wonder if you would consider promoting this RH so that it comes up on the first search because I do not think that there is much doubt about its meaning.

Google throws up some 160k hits, it appears in text that I have read and also Nelson (716.8) gives a translation which matches your WI1, as shown below:-

名宝 【めいほう】 rare treasure; WI1

If you promoted the RH, presumably the 名宝 【めいほう】 rare treasure; WI1 gets deleted.

Editorial Comment I think "famous" rather than "rare".

Current Entry件 [けん] /(n) matter/case/item/(P)/ (1255940)
Headword 1
Reading 1けん
Part-of-speechn,suf
English 1matter
English 2case
English 3item
English 4(as a suffix) a general counter (e.g., 2 murders; 70 treasures)
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThe above amendment is suggested because this headword is used as a counter; see, for example, a click on your [A] link. Various examples in dictionaries support this.

Maybe, one of your experts will be above to expand upon my brief amendment in order to give the novice a more comprehensive understanding.

Editorial Comment I agree on it being a general sort of counter for cases, items, etc. but I don't think it's really a suffix.

Editorial Comment 被虐 mainly occurs in compounds, I think its core meaning is more "suffering (as a result of maltreatment)".

Headword 1柬蒲寨
Reading 1カンボジア
Reading 2かんぼじあ
Part-of-speechn
CommentI believe that there may be a typo in the headword of this entry. According to page 1266 of the New Nelson Japanese-English Character Dictionary, "柬埔寨" is the only correct way of writing Cambodia in kanji. The Japanese Wikipedia entry on Cambodia likewise records only this way of spelling it.

Headword 1迷い
Reading 1まよい
Part-of-speechn
CommentIf you look up the word 迷い on the wwwjdic, you will find the example sentence 私達は道に迷いどうしていいかわからなかった. However this example sentence is the same as the sentence 私達は道に迷ってどうしていいかわからなかった, which illustrates proper use of the verb 迷う.It does not show proper use of the noun 迷い.
