New Entries/Amendments for 2010-04-03

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 3 April.

???/RH/
Headword 1自宗
Reading 1
Part-of-speechn
English 1one's own position
English 2one's own thesis
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThis picks up some 4k Google hits. The translation fits, but I have not found good references. It appears in Roy Miller's reader, but he does not deal with it.

See the entries below:-

自宗 【じしゅう】 one's own position, thesis; BU
違自宗 【いじしゅう】 to contradict one's own thesis; BU

This is confirmed by context and general explanations and some other "non-reference" sources.

If the "RH" were to be promoted that would be good. If you did not want to promote the RH, then perhaps it should be deleted because it give the impression that the meaning is not defined, whereas it is covered in the "BU" section.

Pending your comments on my previous comment on an "RH", I hope that this submission does not breach the same rules.

Editorial Comment Re: "I have not found good references" can I suggest (once again) you use the Goo site with its 大辞林 第二版. There you'll see 自宗 explained as: "自分が属する宗派". GG5 echoes that with "the religious sect one belongs to; one's religious sect." Using Chuck Muller's Buddhism dictionary as a primary reference is risky as his entries are very context-specific.

???/RH/
Headword 1
Reading 1
Part-of-speechn
English 1Buddhist ordination platform institution
English 2building housing the Buddhist ordination platform
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThis picks up some 90k Google hits. The first two kanji are clear, but the complete headword is usually neglected [even by Roy Miller!] in explanations. However, this "RH" comes up in text and promotion would be useful for understanding and confirmation of meaning and reading.

See also the following entries:-

Editorial Comment Did you look at the WWW pages returned by Google? The 戒壇院 is a famous Rinzai temple in Kyuushuu. See http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%88%92%E5%A3%87%E9%99%A2.

Current Entry示寂 [じじゃく] /to manifest extinction/BU/
Headword 1示寂
Reading 1
Part-of-speechexp
English 1to manifest extinction
English 2BU
ReferenceSee below.
CommentJust added in "Part-of-speech."

It was my intention to suggest promotion of two "RHs" as follows:-

???; RH

[as you can see, the RH is entered twice]

Perhaps you would choose to delete the "RHs" rather than promote because of the "BU."

I shall await your guidance before I submit any more of these.

Editorial Comment Again, please look at 大辞林 and take those "BU" glosses with many grains of salt. In a highly Buddhist context, the death of a priest probably does "manifest extinction" but to ordinary English speakers it doesn't really work.

I've made this: "(n) {Buddh} death of a high-ranking priest".

English 3not (your) usual self

Editorial Comment I'm adding that, but I'll keep what's there as it works in many cases too.

Editorial Comment 立ちション added (I presume it's an abbreviation of 立ち小便). As ever the Google images were most illuminating. I was, er, impressed by the 女性用立ちションキット.
