CommentThis gets 3 to 4 k Google hits.

Following your suggestion, Goo gives "昔からいだいている感情。昔の気持ち。". This I am taking as "a reawakened feeling, emotion, passion, sentiment, etc." and it appears as the 3rd translation.

Roy Miller [38] gives the translations 1 and 2.

Editorial Comment I reversed the order of the glosses. I think "old information" is more common.

You'd say that those users have left their 'footprints' (足跡). Similarly 足跡チェック is looking at the page to see who's visiting you.

CommentI added item 4 in order to address a problem i've noticed when using
"Translate Words": when this kanji is not part of a kanji compound (i.e., when
it stands alone) in a non-specialised context, it _usually_ is read もと and not
き ! (I don't think the slight overlap with the entry under 元(P); 本(P); 素; 基
【もと】 is a problem).

Editorial Comment I handle the "Translate Words" problem a different way by having a special entry for 基 which combines both the き and もと meanings. I've just put that togethher and it will take effect tomorrow.

CommentMethinks the kana form should be among the headwords, so that this entry
comes up when a text contains ところ (especially with meanings (8) or (9),
which, for less than fluent users, are the more problematic usages)

CommentAs a follow up to my previous entry: i just noticed that when using "Translate
Words", the following entry comes up for ところ:

• ところ (n) (1) place; spot; scene; site; (2) address; (3) district; area; locality;
(4) one's house; (5) point; (6) part; (7) space; room; (8) whereupon; as a result

Not sure in which database it hides, but how about introducing it into the
main database by way of the amendment i've just sent? :-)

Editorial Comment Strictly speaking, this dictionary has either no headwords or multiple headwords. It all depends what you are looking up, as every Japanese word (kanji and kana) and almost all English words are indexed.
What you are really referring to is the way the Translate Words function works. I don't want to do a match on every kana sequence or I'll repeat one of the old Rikai solecisms of saying the した in 勉強した means "tongue". Instead I have a more limited extract of kana-only entries which is used by the Translate Words function. (This is mentioned in the Guide.) I have now updated the ところ/どころ entries in that file to match the main dictionary. It was a little out of date.

CommentSomething that has been puzzling me for a while are the entries ending in す
る that sometimes show up when using "Translate Words". For example, and
as it happened, i got the following result on one occasion today:

上昇する 【じょうしょうする】 (n,vs,adj-no) rising; ascending; climbing

Considering the meaning of the part-of-speech marker "vs" in the entry 上昇,
the entry 上昇する (and other entries ending in する that duplicate existing
entries) would seem superfluous - nevermind the fact that by just adding す
る one gets the meaning all wrong: 上昇する is not "rising" but "to rise", etc.,
etc.

Editorial Comment In the "glossdic" used by the Translate Words" function I expand many of the plain EDICT entries; adding な versions for adj-na, の versions for adj-no, する/した/して versions for vs, etc. This is to increase the chance of getting an EDICT match rather than a fragment of a phrase or expression. I should add the note "generated verb version" or something like that for the vs ones to make it clearer.

English 2(2) invested
English 3put (pp) (personnel, etc.)
English 4(3) released (a product)
English 5(4) made (an electrical circuit)
CommentThis comes from EP\2 - not sure what that is. :-)
Problem is, the meaning is wrong (in a similar way as the one mentioned in
my previous comment), and i changed it to show what it _would_ be if it was
in the dictionary - i am actually suggesting not to promote it but to delete it.
:-)
All a user needs to know in this case is covered by 投入 (n,vs)... :-)

• 投入した 【とうにゅうした】 (n,vs) (1) throwing (e.g. something into
somewhere); (2) investment; putting in (personnel, etc.); (3) release of a
product; (4) making (an electrical circuit)
