Current Entryひょっこり /(adv) by chance/unexpectedly/ (1010630)
Headword 1ひょっこり
Part-of-speechadv
English 1by chance

ReferenceSee below.
CommentI am using the above entry in order to make a submission on the following "RH" entry:-

ひょっくり (?) ???; RH

I have searched around for "ひょっくり" but, in general, the nearest thing I can find is "ひょっこり". There are many thousands of Google hits for "ひょっくり," however, many are prefixed with "お" and Google images show much food for this search.

My searches and deductions lead me to conclude that "ひょっくり" equals "suddenly," which is not too different from "ひょっこり." Also, because I have found "ひょっくり" in several different places, I do not think that it is a misspelling of "ひょっこり."

The following is an sentence taken from text:-

"... ひょっくり狸がやって来た。" This is taken as "... suddenly Badger put in his appearance." However, "unexpectedly" or "by chance" could be just as correct.

My point is this: maybe the "RH" should be deleted and the "ひょっくり" reading then included as an alternative to the "ひょっこり." However, if it is considered that there is a difference, then the "RH" could be completed with "suddenly."

Editorial Comment My references all say for ひょっくり: "「ひょっこり」に同じ。" or equivalent. I'll add it to the ひょっこり entry.

CommentAdding two more meanings (E) and following up on Jim's comment:
> So Eijiro's "optical waveguide" is wrong?
Well, one could possibly argue that it's technically not wrong, but common
usage is different:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waveguide_(optics)
I see Kenkyusha's 追加語彙 has: "a light-guiding plate (略: LGP)", which I like
too.
Yes, that's another fitting term, as is light guiding panel (see URL below) -
suggest to add both
Anyway, here is some food for thought (i won't be able to follow up on this until
some other time)
