| Comment | I hesitate to join in amongst the experts on such a matter, but you have asked for comment on this entry.
This headword gets so many Google hits in an apparently adverbial position for it to be worthy of a separate entry. For example, "ここにきて見直す." What I wanted to say was basically this: I do not think that the word "recently" is an appropriate gloss for "ここにきて" because, in my way of thinking, "recently" identifies some time in the past, e.g., a recent date, not long ago. Whereas, by the very nature of this headword, the implication is about something which has come from sometime in the past and is progressively moving towards a defined location, namely: "here (ここ)." We know that that something has not yet arrived because, if it had, then the expression would be "ここにきた." I am inclined to take the view that a basic meaning for this headword would fit the case in point. Taking the example given in the submission in question, it would not seem to be wrong if one were to translate it as this: "The research and development has made progress from former times, but coming up to here, a characteristic .... I hope that is of some use, but I shall be looking and learning from what you finally decide. |

After re-reading the posting guidelines, i contemplate this one: "Never guess. If you are not sure of the kanji, or the reading, or the English meaning, don't bother sending it." There has always been a bit of negotiation room, but i am not happy with the situation as it is. I hate to put in entries here of the sort that fall under that guidelines, but there is effectively no other place to go when one is in the middle of work and doesn't have the leisure to attend forums or mailing lists devoted to explaining and vetting vocabulary. Since the different entry page you once set up for handling such uncertain items (it was/is a wiki-like page smewhere on edrdg.org) never attracted the necessary comments to make it work, i have long given up using it (and also since forgotten how to access it). OTOH, given that you have vastly expanded the resources we can use when defining new entries by adding several databases of the type WI#,at least one of which contains lots of incomplete entries could you add a flag to this entry form to allow for incomplete or speculative - but otherwise needed - entries, perhaps in a way that those are not automatically go from the daily submission summary into EDIC but instead into one of those databases from where they can then be taken up and completed at some other time? This, i think, would make it much easier to deal with such items, since there would be only one interface to work with, and all the information needed would be visible in one place... just a thought... |

| Comment | Here is an example of an "uncertain" entry: it is not in the dictionaries i have access to, there is only limited evidence that it exists - but it "smells" like it should be in a comprehensive dictionary. ;-)
2) All the elements of this EXP are known separately, and some may perhaps argue that NES reading "being able to see the back of..." in certain contexts should know that it means "catching up with..." (or, perhaps even "set to overtake ... before long") - but methinks such an EXP as this is valuable at least for the non-NES using JEDIC, if not for _some_ NES... ;-) I also suspect that this EXP is far more typical for what NJS actually say than the 1 original Googit we have for it... |
