The Famous Chung - Breen Meeting
[Originally posted on sci, lang.japan on 24 Feb 1995.]
Well it finally happened. After nearly 4 years of exchanging email and
files, Stephen Chung and I actually had a face-to-face meeting.
It was a case of ships-that-pass-in-the-night. We discovered that we
were
both going to be in Singapore (briefly) at the same time. I was
arriving from Kuala Lumpur on the evening of the 21st, and he was flying
out to Hong Kong early next morning, so we met at about 11pm at his
hotel
(he was staying in the sybaritic Regent; his expense account is a lot
better than mine 8-[}) for a couple of beers and a chat.
It was great to catch up, compare notes, etc. etc.
On the JWP front:
- it is most unlikely that there will ever be a major update to JWP
from Stephen. His life has moved on to other things, and his present
career does not allow much time for developing freeware. [NOT TRUE! See
below.]
- in the next few weeks we hope to put out a new version of the (JWP
version of the) KINFO.DAT file, based on the JDIC version.
- there is a possibility that Stephen will be able to release a final
"maintenance" version of JWP 1.1 which will tidy up a few things, and
align the KINFO.DAT file with the JDIC version. This might take a while,
as he does not even have a C compiler at the moment.
PS: (June 1995) There IS work continuing on JWP! A developers' mailing list is
operating, and V1.2 is in alpha testing. Stay tuned.
PPS: (July 1995) V1.2 was released in July, and an even-better V1.3 is
close.
