Kunichika Toyohara

Kunichika Toyohara, 1835-1900.

Kunichika was one of the late ukiyo-e artists, with most of his output in the early Meiji period. This 1862/83 print is from his 'Famous views of Edo'. It shows the Takebashi Gomon in the background.
(Thanks to Ralph de Butler for the copy of the print in his posession.)

Another early Kunichika is his triptych of 3 actors in a kabui scene. The actors are (from right to left): Ichimura Kakitsu as Tamaya Shimbei, Bandou Mitsugorou as a low-class courtesan from the house of Mikuni-ya, and Ichikawa Kodanji as the villain, Jirobei.
